Overcoming Urban Space Constraints: Monopole Steel Pole Application in Manila’s Narrow Rights-of-Way
Project Background: Power Challenges in High-Density Urban Areas
As one of the world's most densely populated cities, Manila’s grid expansion faces extremely limited Rights-of-Way (ROW). Traditional lattice towers, requiring large footprints (typically over 5m x 5m), cannot access old districts or narrow roadside corridors, hindering urban line upgrades.
Technical Solution: Space Efficiency of Monopoles
To address this, the project utilized Polygonal Slip-joint Monopoles.
  • Footprint Optimization: Compared to lattice towers, the monopole base diameter is only 1.2m - 1.8m, allowing successful deployment along busy street edges without obstructing pedestrian traffic.
  • Installation Efficiency: The Slip-joint design eliminates the need for extensive on-site welding. Using small cranes, assembly was completed during off-peak night hours, minimizing urban traffic disruption.

Technical Specs & Stability

  • Cross-section: A 12-sided structure combined with ASTM A572 Gr.65 high-strength steel ensures the ability to withstand 230km/h typhoon loads despite the narrow diameter.
  • Connection Standard: Overlap length strictly follows the 1.5x internal diameter standard, ensuring continuity and consistency of structural load bearing.

Conclusion

This project demonstrates that monopole steel poles are the optimal choice for high-density urban environments like Manila, providing superior mechanical strength and construction flexibility while minimizing the footprint.
"...this project strictly adhered to [ASTM A123 Hot-dip Galvanizing Standards] to ensure a 50-year service life under tropical conditions."
As a premier global supplier of power transmission infrastructure, Futao Metal Structural Unit Co., Ltd. specializes in high-reliability steel pole solutions for LATAM and worldwide utility projects. Our products strictly adhere to ASTM A572 Grade 65 material standards and ASTM A123 hot-dip galvanizing, ensuring long-term structural stability under extreme wind loads and corrosive environments.
